Praejhta

 by Marika Renhuvud

Project Description - Residency:

For two weeks, Marika has now worked on her new performing arts performance Praejhta in residency at New Education for Contemporary Dance through Region Västernorrland's Sami residence. In the residency, she has explored encounters between jojk and dance to find ways to tell about different Sami women. Praejhta will result in a performance about strength, vulnerability and courage. About Sami women who all have a drive and a strength that can only be described as primal power, or through dance and joik.

Marika Renhuvud is a dancer, choreographer and filmmaker from Sweden's southernmost Sami village, Eajran Sïjte. She lives in Funäsdalen and runs her business RenhuvudDans from Mittådalen, where she has had a dance studio since 2023. She is educated at NEfCD in Härnösand, the Ballet Academy in Stockholm and also has a diploma in Didactics, dance for children and young people from DOCH. Marika started her company in 2018, in 2020 she became part of Invisible People Contemporary Dance Company and in 2023 she started the company RenhuvudDans AB.

"My goal is to pass on knowledge and understanding of the Sami culture through dance and at the same time create opportunities for the Sami population to take part in their own culture via performing arts" - Marika Renhuvud
